Do Compression Garments Actually Work? What the Science Says for Athletes

Compression Is Everywhere. But Does It Actually Work?

Walk around the finish area of almost any marathon, triathlon, or cycling event - you’ll see them: compression socks, sleeves, and tights. 

They’ve become part of the standard endurance-athlete recovery kit, promising everything from improved circulation to faster recovery and better performance - but those are very different claims.

The research suggests compression can be a legitimate recovery tool. What it probably isn't is a shortcut to better race-day performance.

Here’s what athletes should know.

First: What Does “Compression” Actually Mean?

Compression garments apply external pressure to the body. With graduated compression, that pressure is greatest near the ankle and gradually decreases farther up the leg.

Pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) — the same unit used when measuring blood pressure.

The proposed recovery mechanism is relatively straightforward: compression may help reduce venous pooling and swelling following exercise. Unlike cold-water immersion, it does this without cooling or stiffening the tissue.

That distinction can make compression particularly attractive when an athlete wants to begin recovering immediately without adding another major physiological stressor.

The Evidence for Recovery Is Encouraging

A 2014 review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found compression garments produced moderate and relatively consistent benefits across several measures of exercise recovery, including:

  • Muscle soreness
  • Recovery of strength
  • Recovery of power
  • Markers associated with exercise-induced muscle damage

That doesn't mean compression suddenly becomes more important than eating enough, replenishing carbohydrates, rehydrating or sleeping.

It means that once those foundations are covered, compression may provide an additional recovery benefit.

That distinction matters.

But What About Endurance Athletes?

This is where the evidence becomes less certain. Many compression studies combine athletes and exercise protocols from different sports, while the smaller body of endurance-specific research has produced conflicting results.

One particularly interesting study followed 33 marathon runners. Athletes wore graduated compression socks providing 30–40 mmHg of pressure for 48 hours after completing a marathon.

When tested again two weeks later, run-to-exhaustion performance in the compression group had improved 2.6%, while performance in the placebo group had fallen 3.4%.

That's a striking result — but one study shouldn't be treated as the final word.

The larger endurance literature remains mixed, meaning the fairest conclusion is that compression may aid recovery, but the magnitude of that benefit likely varies among athletes and situations.

What If You Wear Compression During a Race?

This is where marketing and evidence begin to separate.

A 2025 review covering 51 studies and 899 runners found that wearing compression garments did not produce faster race times or extend time to exhaustion.

In other words:

Compression does not appear to make you meaningfully faster simply because you're wearing it.

The garments did appear to reduce leg vibration, which could influence comfort or an athlete's subjective experience. And if an athlete simply prefers how compression feels while running, that's a perfectly legitimate reason to use it.

But it shouldn't be viewed as a proven performance enhancer.

How Athletes Can Actually Use Compression

For athletes interested in adding compression to their recovery routine, a practical starting point is 20–30 mmHg of graduated lower-body compression.

Whether that comes from socks, sleeves or tights is less important. Those options haven't been sufficiently tested head-to-head to declare a clear winner, so fit, comfort and practicality should drive the decision. And timing matters.

Compression makes the most sense after demanding training and racing, when you're trying to support the recovery process — not on the starting line in search of a performance advantage that the research hasn't demonstrated.

The Bottom Line

Compression sits in an interesting place in the recovery hierarchy.

It isn't snake oil. There are plausible physiological mechanisms and legitimate evidence supporting improvements in several markers of post-exercise recovery.

It also isn't magic.

For endurance athletes specifically, the evidence is less conclusive, and wearing compression during competition has not consistently improved performance.

So think of compression as an “extra” — something that can complement a strong recovery routine once the important pieces are already handled.

Fuel adequately. Rehydrate. Sleep. Then worry about the socks.

That hierarchy may not be as exciting as the latest recovery gadget, but it's where the science continues to point.
